LICHFIELD CITY VS SHIFNAL TOWN Match Report

LICHFIELD CITY 0 SHIFNAL TOWN 0

Midland Football League, Premier Division

Saturday 3 December 2022

Both sides will probably consider that they deserved to win this game, so a draw was actually a fair result. After a slow start, the visitors took control of the game and, in all honesty, they should have had at least one goal to show for their efforts by the interval. The home side had the first attempt on goal after 8 minutes, Dan Lomas heading over from Jack Edwards’ free-kick. It took a fine save from home custodian James Beeson to prevent a Shifnal goal in the 13th minute, Mikey Nelson’s superb cross from the right being met by Kane Lewis 6 yards out. The woodwork denied the visitors on 17 minutes, following more good play on the right. The ball fell to Keanu Cooper, but his 15-yard shot came back off the crossbar. Shifnal were again denied by the woodwork after 27 minutes when the ball fell to Nelson 6 yards out, but he smashed it against the near post, when he really should have scored. Both sides had further chances before the break, but the teams turned round goalless.

The second half was very different, as City looked much more dangerous, only to come up against a very strong defence. Adam Whitehouse made a fine save in the 55th minute from Sam Fitzgerald’s fierce 15-yard drive. Town struggled to keep possession as they were pushed back by their opponents. Lewi Burnside fired over from the edge of the penalty area on 71 minutes, after Joe Haines headed the ball down for him. The only real chance falling to the visitors in this half came after 78 minutes, when substitute Tom Hill shot narrowly wide. The hosts could have won the game in the 82nd minute when Luke Childs turned a defender and shot from 15 yards, Whitehouse turning the ball round the post with his foot.
