Match Report AFC WULFRUNIANS VS SHIFNAL TOWN Saturday 1 October 2022

AFC WULFRUNIANS 5 SHIFNAL TOWN 0

Midland Football League, Premier Division

Saturday 1 October 2022

A dreadful performance by Shifnal against a strong Wulfrunians side ended with Town getting their just desserts. The first half of the first period was quite even as the sides weighed each other up. The visitors had the first chance on goal after 13 minutes, when Joe Thompson surged forward, but his fierce shot came back off the near post and he put his follow-up into the side-netting. The hosts’ first chance came in the 22nd minute with a break down the right. The ball was played inside to Jay Holdcroft, whose first-time shot was deflected into the side-netting. 2 minutes later, Wulfrunians were ahead when defensive sloppiness let in AARON BISHOP, who rounded the keeper and passed the ball into an empty net. They doubled their lead on 38 minutes, TOM RAY reacting first to head home a free-kick from the right.

Shifnal had a golden opportunity to get back into the game after 54 minutes, when Jeremy Abbey played the ball over the top for substitute Tom Hill, but he shot tamely into the arms of Jake James. From this point on, it was all Wulfs as the visitors rarely managed to get into the opposition half of the field. In the 57th minute, the Town defence failed to clear the ball when they had the chance and it fell to BRAD SHARMAN, who coolly chipped the ball into the far corner leaving Sheridan Martinez looking on with admiration. Poor defending led to the fourth goal on 67 minutes, HAYDEN REEVES having a free header from a corner. 2 minutes later, the Shifnal defence was torn apart again, but Eshan Greer fired wide from 20 yards. The final goal came in the 81st minute when Sean Jones made a hash of a back-pass, substitute TOM POOLE nipping in to slide the ball into the net from 15 yards.
