LYE TOWN 0 SHIFNAL TOWN 3
Midland Football League, Premier Division
Saturday 17 September 2022
Shifnal’s unbeaten record in the league was extended with a comfortable victory in the Black Country. Early pressure brought a goal after 10 minutes from an unlikely source, Jack Kelly’s corner being completely misjudged by home keeper BEN NEWEY, who fumbled the ball into his own net. Newey redeemed himself somewhat 3 minutes later when he was quickly off his line to save with his feet from Tyrone Ofori, who was through on goal. Apart from a 20-yard effort from Jason Chilton on 19 minutes, little was seen of the hosts as an attacking force before the interval. Joe Thompson came close for the visitors on the half-hour, cutting in from the left, but Newey narrowed the angle and saved well. Moments before the half-time whistle, Shifnal doubled their lead when JOSH GREEN powered the ball into the top corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area.
The third goal came in the 64th minute as Ofori and Tom Hill combined well to set up THOMPSON, who sidefooted home from 12 yards. The home side seemed to come to life after this goal and looked much more purposeful for the remainder of the game. Joe Palmer was denied by a good save from Sheridan Martinez as he cut in from the left on 69 minutes. Martinez was again in action after 84 minutes when substitute Adam Hanson latched on to a loose ball and shot from 15 yards, the keeper turning the ball round the post for a corner.
