MATCH REPORT SHIFNAL TOWN 3 WALSALL WOOD

SHIFNAL TOWN 3 WALSALL WOOD 3

Midland Football League, Premier Division

Saturday 5 November 2022

This was an excellent game of football, largely dominated by the visitors before the interval, but then an end-to-end second period. Had the visitors taken their chances in the first half, the game would have been over. After a tentative start, Daniel Gyasi turned inside for Wood after 16 minutes, but Adam Whitehouse dived to save his shot from the edge of the penalty area. A minute later, the effervescent Jai Verma raced in from the left, but his cross was deflected by a home defender against the upright. Sam Unitt found himself through on the Shifnal goal in the 25th minute, but was denied by a superbly-timed tackle by Sam Griffiths. 2 minutes later, Verma again cut in from the left, but Whitehouse turned his angled shot for a corner. The visitors’ pressure eventually told on 38 minutes, when Gyasi passed inside for JOE FITZPATRICK, and he curled a beauty into the top corner of the net from 25 yards. Their joy was short-lived as they were caught out by Josh Green’s long throw a minute before the break, the ball being headed on to TYRONE OFORI, who controlled the ball and fired into the bottom corner from 10 yards.

Town’s frailty from corners was exposed in the 49th minute, when a corner from the right was glanced into his own net by ASA CHARLTON. A minute later, the scores were level again when Ryan Campbell-Gordon beat a defender on the left and crossed to MIKEY NELSON, who took a touch, then hammered the ball into the roof of the net from 12 yards. Verma brought a fine save from Whitehouse after 55 minutes, with a 25-yard effort towards the top corner. Shifnal again messed up a Wood corner on 68 minutes, ADAM McGURK being left unmarked to head into the bottom corner of the net. It looked as if the game was going to end in defeat for Town, until a moment of magic a minute into stoppage time changed the game again. Nelson received the ball on the edge of the penalty area, and laid it off for substitute TOM HILL, who powered the ball past Callum Smith for Shifnal’s third equaliser of the game.
