MATCH REPORT SHIFNAL TOWN VS LYE TOWN

SHIFNAL TOWN 0 LYE TOWN 2

Midland Football League Cup, Round 1

Tuesday 25 October 2022

Shifnal bowed out of the second cup competition in four days, losing to a strong Lye side that took its chances, which the hosts did not. Shifnal had the better of the play for the first half hour, but were unable to make the most of their chances. In the 10th minute, a superb cross from Ryan Campbell-Gordon found debutant Asa Charlton’s head, but the ball passed inches wide of the far post as Sam Griffiths lunged in to try to turn the ball into the net. Mikey Nelson created a couple of chances which were not taken; first a fine cross just evading an inrushing forward. Then a free-kick was headed out by a Lye defender to Nelson, but his low shot from 25 yards was narrowly wide. The visitors should have taken the lead after 36 minutes when substitute Umaro Saho did well to win the ball on the right, but his pinpoint cross was headed over by Josh Hesson.

Lye opened the scoring in the 49th minute with a scorcher! Ben Billingham tried a shot from a 35-yard free-kick, which came back off a defender and BILLINGHAM fired an unstoppable volley into the bottom corner of the net. 4 minutes later, the game was effectively over when the visitors broke on the right, MAX NGBEKEN streaking past a defender and driving past Adam Whitehouse from 20 yards. The home side were desperately unlucky not to pull a goal back on 74 minutes, when Josh Green’s 25-yard free-kick left Brad Catlow standing, only for the ball to crash against the crossbar and back into play. Substitute Keanu Cooper came close after 80 minutes, Catlow saving his 20-yard drive with his feet.
