SHIFNAL TOWN 2 MARKET DRAYTON TOWN 0
Midland Football League, Premier Division
Tuesday 27 September 2022
This was a close game for the first 40 minutes, but the hosts took control after opening the scoring shortly before the interval. Shifnal made a good start, and Drayton keeper Dominic Smith did well to turn Ashley Brown’s 25-yard free-kick round the post in the 4th minute. The visitors came close to scoring after 14 minutes, when Rune Corinaldi’s 20-yard effort flashed past the far post. Jeremy Abbey and Harvey Lewis had chances which were either saved by Smith or narrowly wide as Shifnal pushed for the all-important first goal, whilst at the other end, Durell Manhertz was too high with a shot from just outside the penalty area. The first goal came on 42 minutes, when a quickly-taken free-kick was played to Tom Hill, who played it into the path of LEWIS. He took a touch and beat Smith with a fierce angled shot.
The home side looked the more dangerous after the break, and a quick break in the 58th minute saw Abbey’s shot turned past the near post by Smith. A minute later, it was 2-0 when Lewis received the ball wide on the right. His low cross was thumped past Smith by ABBEY from 10 yards. Resolute defending by the visitors ensured that there were no more goals. 3 minutes before the final whistle, it looked odds-on a third goal when substitute Luke Walsh made a good run before picking out Lewis, but a fine last-ditch tackle by Kian Garbett prevented the goal.
