MATCH REPORT SHIFNAL TOWN VS SHAWBURY UNITED TJ Vickers Shropshire Premier Cup

SHIFNAL TOWN 1 SHAWBURY UNITED 1

(Shifnal won 4-3 on penalties)

TJ Vickers Shropshire Premier Cup, Round 1

Tuesday 18 October 2022

A dreadful first half display saw Town 1-0 down at half-time, and seemingly heading out of the competition. No doubt words were said during the break, as they upped their game in the second period, but it took a penalty shoot-out for them to progress. United, playing a division below Town, shocked their hosts with a goal after only 7 minutes. The lively JOE THOMAS surged forward from midfield and fired an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner from 25 yards. The goal did nothing to dent the lethargy surrounding the home side, and their first effort on goal came in the 41st minute, when Jeremy Abbey won the ball on the edge of the penalty area, but his low shot was deflected for a corner.

The second half was very different from the first, as Shifnal started to find their men with passes and generally looked more dangerous. Kane Lewis brought the best out of Luke Bishop with a 25-yard piledriver on 50 minutes, and it began to look like when they would equalise rather than if they would. The equaliser, when it came after 75 minutes, was the softest goal one could imagine. LEWIS’ corner from the right looked like a mis-kick, but somehow the ball crept past a defender at the near post and ended up in the net. 2 minutes before the end of the 90, Emem Jones’ header from Jack Fishman’s corner struck the top of the crossbar. This was the last meaningful action and the game went into penalties. Town keeper Adam Whitehouse saved two of United’s five kicks, whilst Town converted all four of theirs, to move into the semi-final.
