MATCH REPORT SHIFNAL TOWN VS WORCESTER CITY

SHIFNAL TOWN 2 WORCESTER CITY 0

Midland Football League, Premier Division

Tuesday 1 November 2022

This was a good performance against a Worcester side that looked better than their league position would suggest. It was largely one-way traffic for the first half-hour, with Town creating numerous chances, but only having one goal to show for their supremacy. The City defence struggled to clear a long throw in the 6th minute, and Luke Walsh was unfortunate to see his 20-yard drive come back off the upright. A minute later, Town were ahead, when Mikey Nelson’s superb cross from the right was met with a near-post header by JEREMY ABBEY to beat the excellent Adam Harrison in the visitors’ goal. An incredible goalmouth melee after 11 minutes somehow failed to result in a goal, thanks mainly to Harrison. A long clearance from Ashley Brown on 31 minutes found Tyrone Ofori, who held off a defender, but his 20-yard shot was narrowly wide of the advancing Harrison. Gradually the visitors came back into the game, and Harry Lewis was close in the 37th minute with a low 25-yard effort which Adam Whitehouse saved with his feet.

2 minutes into the second period, Town came close to extending their lead, when Brown played a one-two with Ofori, but Harrison saved Brown’s shot with his feet. The visitors should have equalised in the 51st minute when Reiss Taylor Randle was well placed, but he sidefooted wide from close range. Shortly afterwards, Ofori broke through on the left, but Harrison was quickly out to deflect his shot for a corner. The much-needed second goal came after 71 minutes, when the ball came out to NELSON wide on the right. We will never know whether his curling effort was meant as a shot or a cross, but it deceived Harrison and dropped into the far top corner of the net. Substitute Max Chimenes brought another fine save from Harrison on 85 minutes when he received the ball from a throw-in and cut inside, the keeper turning his low shot round the post for a corner.
