MATCH REPORT STOURPORT SWIFTS VSSHIFNAL TOWN

STOURPORT SWIFTS 4 SHIFNAL TOWN 2

Isuzu FA Vase, Round 1

Saturday 22 October 2022

Although Shifnal were the better side for large periods in this game, two bad goals either side of the half-time break effectively ended their interest in the FA Vase for this season. The hosts opened the scoring after only 4 minutes when Cain Smith broke down the right, and the Town defence were all at sea as BEN TILBURY turned the ball in from close range. Shifnal then enjoyed most of the possession for the remainder of the first period, without being able to test Josh Bishop in the home goal. As the game moved into stoppage time, Jim Hanson’s cross-come-shot was turned over the crossbar by Town keeper Adam Whitehouse. The visitors’ defence was unable to cope with evergreen Lee Chilton’s corner-kick, and the ball ended up in the net via former Town player BEN JEVONS’ back side.

3 minutes into the second half, another Chilton corner was not dealt with, and TILBURY lashed home his second and Swifts’ third. It was not until the 56th minute that Shifnal really tested the home defence, and they struggled to clear a free-kick, MAX CHIMENES blasting the loose ball past Bishop from the edge of the penalty area. The Reds’ joy was short-lived, however, as 3 minutes later, CHILTON fired home from a low ball in from the right. Joe Thompson came close to pulling a goal back on 62 minutes, his low effort from just inside the box passing inches wide of the upright. Town were handed a lifeline in the 71st minute, when Jevons brought down Chimenes in the area, THOMPSON sending Bishop the wrong way from the spot. Shifnal were unable to add to this as Swifts moved into the second round of the competition.
