SHIFNAL TOWN VS BEWDLEY TOWN Match Report

SHIFNAL TOWN 3 BEWDLEY TOWN 0

Midland Football League, Premier Division

Tuesday 22 November 2022

A solid performance saw Shifnal take all three points, and at the same time, they eased into second place in the league table. The home side had the chance to take the lead after only 4 minutes, when Tyrone Ofori came in from the left, but Haydn Whitcombe was quickly off his line to smother the shot. The visitors came close in the 9th minute when a cross from the left was inches away from Josh Carpenter’s head. Shifnal were causing all sorts of problems to the visitors’ defence from the wings, particularly Mikey Nelson on the right. Jack Kelly was unfortunate with a 14th-minute header from a corner, which was headed off the line by a defender. Bewdley showed their threat on 26 minutes when Sam Lester did well on the right before crossing for Carpenter, whose 20-yard shot was just too high. 2 minutes later, the hosts were ahead, when Nelson crossed from the right, the ball falling to JEREMY ABBEY, who netted from close range. Nelson was again in the thick of the action after 35 minutes with a quick break, but his chip over Whitcombe was intercepted by a defender. A minute later, a corner from the right was headed against the crossbar by Ofori. A minute before the break, the visitors had a chance to equalise when Ewan Edwards played the ball inside for Carpenter, but his first-time shot was blocked by a defender.

2 minutes into the second period, Shifnal doubled their lead from a break down the right. Nelson cut in along the by-line and shot, the ball going into the net off the unfortunate Bewdley skipper SAM PRESCOT. Abbey brought the best out of Whitcombe with a fierce 25-yard drive after 64 minutes, as the hosts strove to put the game out of Bewdley’s reach. This they finally did in the 72nd minute, substitute Luke Walsh receiving the ball on the right before pulling it back to KANE LEWIS, who made no mistake from the edge of the penalty area. The visitors kept going until the final whistle, and substitute Moubarak Moumouni found himself through on goal on 84 minutes, but his 20-yard shot was saved at full stretch by Adam Whitehouse.
