SHIFNAL TOWN vs TIVIDALE Saturday 19 November 2022

SHIFNAL TOWN 2 TIVIDALE 0

Midland Football League, Premier Division

Saturday 19 November 2022

If the home side had taken all of the chances that they created, the game would have been over as a contest by half-time. As it was, after an early goal, Town supporters were on the edge of their seats until the 89th minute, when they finally put the game to bed. A cagy start saw both sides sparring for a breakthrough, until the hosts opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Keanu Cooper’s crossfield ball was retrieved by Kane Lewis, who laid it off for JEREMY ABBEY. He turned and slotted the ball inside the far post from 12 yards. Shifnal were close to doubling their lead after 19 minutes, when Mikey Nelson’s cross was half-cleared to Abbey, whose header was turned onto the top of the crossbar by Pete Hawk in the Tividale goal. The resulting corner came to Abbey again, but Hawk dived to turn his low shot round the post for another corner. The visitors’ first effort on goal came in the 27th minute, when Jason Wood’s 25-yard shot was deflected for a corner. The hosts really should have extended their lead on 35 minutes, when Josh Green’s superb cross found Tyrone Ofori unmarked in front of goal, but his header was too high.

Town had a scare 3 minutes after the interval with a quick break which ended with Dan Smith’s 20-yard effort beating Adam Whitehouse, only to come back off the crossbar. Shifnal were awarded a penalty after 57 minutes when Hawk brought down Nelson in the area, but the keeper atoned for his mistake by saving Abbey’s spot-kick. A minute later at the other end, Malcolm Malvin had a 20-yard shot turned round the post by Whitehouse as Tividale pressed for an equaliser. 2 minutes later, a low cross from the right was ballooned over by Smith from 10 yards. Green was unlucky after 62 minutes with a 20-yard free-kick which glanced off a defender’s head for a corner. The visitors’ substitute Ryan Snape brought a good save from Whitehouse with an angled effort in the 65th minute. Shifnal grabbed the all-important second goal after 89 minutes, when Jack Kelly played the ball out to substitute LUKE WALSH, who dribbled across the edge of the penalty area, checked and turned before clipping the ball over Hawk to decide the game.
